Managing the Media : A Talk by Top Editor Mr Cheong Yip Seng
“When the PAP government won a decisive mandate to govern an independent Singapore, it decided to manage the media its own unique way. It claimed the right to exclusively set the agenda for national discourse, on the grounds that the needs of the media must be subordinated to the overriding interests of the state.
It did not mean it wanted an obsequious press. On the contrary, it believes only a credible one has value.
While the broad principles of media management remain, its practice took into account changing conditions. As the electorate became more educated, the economy more open and diversified, and with the growing impact of new media technology, political space increased.
All this makes for a more challenging environment for media professionals today.”
