Solar - Wind - Renewables : Reinforcing the Electric Grid
Modern civilization inherently depends on the unfailing supply of high amount of energy. For example, every year Singapore requires ca. 45 Tera Watt hour (1 TWh=1012 Watt hour) of electrical energy, USA requires about 25,000 TWh, etc. Most of the energy worldwide still comes from burning the fossil fuels, e.g., most of Singapore’s power is generated from gas. With increasing industrial and personal electrical & electronic appliances, the energy demand is only going to increase, while the sources are depleting. Fossil fuel based power generation also has serious negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, we have to look into the renewable energy for long-term solution to meet our energy demand. This talk will give an overview of the energy landscape, different forms of renewable energy, and their utilization in the electric grid with the respective challenges.
