“What determines membership in meta-organizations? The case of Higher Education and the International Association of Universities”

By  Jens Jungblut

Abstract

Empirical studies on the determinants of meta-organizational membership are a blind spot in the literature. Meta-organizations are expected to include most if not all eligible organizations in a given organizational field. The International Association of Universities (IAU) is the only global meta-organization in higher education. Barriers for membership are low, yet far from all universities are members. What determines membership in this higher education meta-organization? Using multi-level regression analysis on data from the World Higher Education Database, we test multiple predictors. Findings suggest that younger private institutions from peripheral areas and those with high status ranks are more likely to be IAU members. International offices, membership in regional university associations and international curricula are also strong predictors suggesting a particular type of member organization, the internationally-oriented university. Meta-organizational membership is a complex process involving multiple factors, while being conditioned by the degree of fragmentation and stratification in an organizational field.
