“DOING GOOD WITH THE SMALL” - MICROBES IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND REMEDIATION

As part of our "Did You Know" Monthly Talk Series at Nanyang Technological University, we have Professor Ng Wun Jern, Professor and Principal Lead, Environmental Bio-innovations Group (EBiG), School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University to speak on “DOING GOOD WITH THE SMALL” - MICROBES IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND REMEDIATION.

SYNOPSIS: Microbes often have a bad reputation. We typically see them as disease causing and so should be eliminated - call to mind advertisements on disinfectants and the millions of microbes killed at a squirt.  This talk, however, argues there are good and useful microbes and that we can work with the good to mutual benefit. For example, in wastewater treatment, presenting appropriate pollutants as food to the microbes may offer a renewable biomass-derived energy source from agri-industry wastes. Also, benign microbes introduced into the soil may also help trigger plant responses such as increased drought tolerance and disease resistance.
