About the speaker

Winnie Cheng is Adjunct Professor at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She was formerly Associate Dean of the university’s Faculty of Humanities, as well as Professor of English and Director of the Research Centre for Professional Communication in English (RCPCE), Department of English. She is a Founding Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of the Humanities. Her research interests include corpus linguistics, conversation analysis, critical discourse analysis, discourse intonation, ESP, intercultural pragmatics and communication, professional and organizational communication, and writing across the curriculum.

 

 

"Corpus-driven approach to ESP research and writing for publication"

This workshop will begin with a talk on the following topics:

  • The need to publish

  • Characteristics of writers of English as an additional language (EAL)

  • Potential of corpus techniques in ESP research in English

  • Indirect and direct use of English language corpora

  • RCPCE-profession Specific Corpora: Some ESP research findings http://rcpce.engl.polyu.edu.hk/index.html

  • ESP research and writing for publication

The talk will be followed by Q&A and a discussion about participants’ individual needs, interests and goals in using ESP corpora for research and writing for publication, and then ways to achieve their goals, by brainstorming possible research projects, methods and strategies.
