TI6112 Applied Translation (III): A Cultural Approach to the Learning of Translation Skills (1 AU)

This course will provide students an opportunity to have a review of the cultural elements in the use of the Chinese and English languages and conduct a contrastive analysis of the cultural differences reflected particularly in idiomatic expressions and preferences in the use of sentence types of the two languages. After the review and analysis, students will learn how to apply cultural knowledge to the learning of translation skills. Hands-on exercises will be provided for students to identify and handle cultural elements in translation. Students will also learn to evaluate the qualities and differences of various target texts (TT) in comparison with the source texts (ST). In practice, English and Chinese are given equal emphasis in terms of source language (SL) and target language (TL).
