GC-TSS - Career Preparation

Preparing for a Non-Academic Career

by  Dr Elaine Walsh

24 November 2021, Wed | 10.30am – 12noon | Livestream

About the seminar:

This interactive webinar will provide guidance on how to maximize the value to non-academic employers of the key skills and attributes developed through postgraduate study. It is designed specifically for PhD researchers and will equip participants to bridge the ‘communication gap’ which may exist between the academic and non-academic world. As a result of attending this webinar, participants will be better equipped to ‘translate’ the value of their research skills and experience into success in non-academic career recruitment.

About the speaker:

With a background as a Chartered Engineer in aerospace engineering, Elaine is a freelance soft skills development consultant and an expert in doctoral education and career management. For more than ten years, Elaine led the team responsible for postgraduate professional development at Imperial College London, supporting more than 6000 graduate students in realising both academic and career goals. During this time, the innovation and impact of her team’s work were recognised by two national awards and resulted in numerous invitations to partner with internationally leading universities including NTU, HKU, MIT, and Tsinghua University. Elaine continues to research on doctoral education issues including the evaluation of skills development courses, the wellbeing of researchers and the role of creativity in scientific research.

*Do note that students are required to stay for 75% of the seminar duration in order to get their attendance endorsed.
