Speaker: Professor Max Xiaobing Tang

Chairperson: Professor Luke Kang Kwong Kapathy

The rise of choral or community singing as public performance in Shanghai during the 1930s was the result of overlapping historical developments and conditions. In this lecture, Professor Tang will trace how new sound technologies, the emergence of new singing subjects, and an acute sense of the nation in crisis converged to turn community singing into a fresh musical practice and give birth to a new sonic culture across the country. The almost instant popularity and lasting appeal of the theme song of a 1935 film well illustrates the reach and relevance of this new sonic culture.
