Title | Pilot Wire Supervision (PWS) Enhancement to Monitor Short Circuit |
Summary | Unit Protection systems plays a crucial role in protecting power cables. The purpose of the Pilot Wire Supervision (PWS) box overseeing the unit protection device is to facilitate real- time monitoring for detection of pilot wire health. It is a non-intrusive system that can trigger an alarm via SCADA systems when abnormality is detected. Currently the PWS can pick up open circuit (OC) and reverse current flows. In this project, the student is required to perform circuit design analysis to enhance the system. The project objectives are given as follow: 1. Learn and understand the concept of the current differential protection system. In industry, it is known as “Main Protection” as it is the main form of protection for a zone of assets (namely cable assets). 2. Conduct lab tests with various industrial equipment and design or propose a new circuit diagram that can monitor the health of the pilot wire’s health condition. 3. Live testing may be done to ensure that the resulting deliverable is non-intrusive and does not disrupt nominal operation of the existing protection system within the live distribution network. This is an industry sponsored project with Singapore Power. Students undertaking power engineering specialization are recommended. |
