Title Multi-mode optical amplifiers for high-speed communications
Summary To meet the ever-increasing internet traffic, multi-mode optical fibres are studied for multi-channel transmission and amplification. One of the biggest challenges in realising multi-mode fibre amplifiers is related to different mode profiles in a same fibre, which results in non-uniform distribution of amplification, and eventually a loss of signal. This project will investigate a fibre design that can promote uniform optical amplification among all the supported modes (hence channels). A student will conduct theoretical studies to understand the causes of the non-uniform amplification and propose a possible fibre design that can enhance uniformity of amplification.
