Title Power efficient optical fibre amplifiers
Summary A cladding pumped fibre amplifier is known for its ability of saving power consumption as all the cores are simultaneously pumped by a single multimoded pump source. However, the use of the cladding pumping scheme inevitably raises concerns on a high noise level and also induces non-uniform gain distribution among the cores sharing a same cladding.. One possible solution to reduce the issues is to utilise non-circular cladding to enhance homogeneity of the pump light across the entire fibre cross-section. This project will study effects of non-circular cladding on performance of multi-core fibre amplifiers. A student is expected to design a multi-core fibre and use a simulation tool to understand amplification performance built around the designed fibre.
