Title Design of Digital Supply Modulator IC for 5G and 6G applications - 1
Summary One of the main challenges in current and future 5G, as well as upcoming 6G (and beyond) wireless systems, is high power dissipation, with the Radio Frequency (RF) Power Amplifier being the most power-intensive component. Present-day devices use an Envelope Tracking Modulator to vary the RF Power Amplifier's supply voltage, achieving up to 65% power savings. However, its application to next-generation 5G and 6G systems is limited due to bandwidth constraints. Specifically, the Envelope Tracking Modulator has a bandwidth limit of 200 MHz, while 5G systems require up to 2 GHz bandwidth and 6G could demand up to 1 THz. In contrast, the Digital Supply Modulator offers a promising solution for next-generation wireless systems. It works by down-sampling the envelope signal and generating a digital-like signal to modulate the supply voltage of the RF Power Amplifier. This approach potentially features unlimited bandwidth, making it well-suited for the demands of 5G, 6G, and beyond.
This project focuses on IC design, with the primary objective of developing a Digital Supply Modulator IC. The specific objective of this project is to model various building blocks of a Digital Supply Modulator, and to complete the system-level simulation.
This project is research-oriented and could potentially be extended into a master's or Ph.D. research project. The student will collaborate with other researchers, including Ph.D. students and MSc students.
