Title Ultra-compact bent waveguide
Summary Integrated optics is a science that studies the integration of optical components to achieve the integration of optical components with different functions on the same chip. Integrated optics is divided into optical-optical integration and photovoltaic integration. Bending waveguide is an important component to improve the integration of integrated optics. When the transmission loss is below a certain threshold, other forms of loss will play a dominant role. Therefore, to achieve small-size and low-loss curved waveguides, it is necessary to analyze the mode transmission characteristics and loss characteristics of the light beam in the curved waveguide section to reduce other forms of loss.
In this project, we will study the loss mechanism of the bent waveguide as well as give a design solution for low loss bent waveguide sections. By studying the loss mechanism of the bent waveguide part, i.e., transmission loss, radiation loss, and mode conversion loss, we can get the method to suppress the loss of bent waveguide. The bent waveguide designed in this project will enhance the integration scale of integrated photonic devices.
The project will cover waveguide optics, semiconductor device physics and advanced numerical simulation tools. The learning curve should be (1) to understand the theory of mode coupling in waveguide optics, (2) to simulate the basic waveguide structure and obtain its optimal parameters, (3) to optimize the performance of the structure in combination with algorithms such as inverse design or deep learning, and (4) as a demonstration, if the simulation results are sufficiently interesting, we will attempt to fabricate the device.
Through these studies, students will gain basic knowledge in optical communications and complete training in optical device design and preparation, which will help them understand the field of optical communications and prepare them to master this emerging on-chip communication and transmission technology.
