Title COLREG Compliant Rule-based Automation for Maritime Vessel Navigation
Summary This project aims to develop a COLREG-compliant rule-based automation system for maritime vessel navigation. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs) are globally recognized rules that govern how vessels should interact to prevent accidents, covering right-of-way, overtaking, crossing, and head-on situations. Ensuring strict compliance is essential for safety, cooperation, and the acceptance of autonomous vessels.
Compared with learning-based approaches, rule-based systems offer deterministic and explainable decision-making, making them well-suited for safety-critical and regulated environments. However, existing rule-based methods often lack long-term planning and adaptability in complex traffic conditions.
To address these limitations, this project proposes a hybrid framework that integrates a global planner for fuel-efficient routing with a COLREG-aware local planner for real-time manoeuvring and collision avoidance. The outcome will be a safe, reliable, and interpretable navigation system that combines efficiency with strict regulatory compliance, supporting the wider adoption of autonomous shipping.
