Title Design and Implementation of Multilevel Converters for Smart Grid Applications
Summary Multilevel converters have gained a lot of research attentions in smart grid applications. It is considered as one of the industrial solutions for high dynamic performance and power-quality demanding applications. Different control strategies for multilevel converters, e.g. capacitor voltage balancing control and output power control, are needed to optimize system performance and to reduce harmonics in output voltage, circulating current, and capacitor voltage ripple. However, pure offline simulations may not reveal all the salient characteristics of the control schemes sufficiently. In this project, the multilevel converter system prototyping will be designed and constructed in the laboratory, and hardware experiments will be conducted to validate the developed control algorithms in this project. Students with basic background knowledge of circuit design and debugging techniques are preferred.
