Title Secure Monitoring of Ship Location using VDES Technology and Satellite Communication
Summary A VHF Data Exchange System (VDES) satellite payload with the AIS receive capability can
remotely record and monitor the AIS reporting from the ships. The satellite payload can
validate the ship’s location with its own location information when the AIS messages are
recorded. The payload can further report the data logged to a remote hosted shore server via
the Inter-Satellite Data Relay System (IDRS) via the Inmarsat BGAN network. The
frequency of reporting can be defined by the use case requirements. The validation of the
location information can be offloaded to a remote hosted server and the ships which have
reported their location wrongly can be flagged out for further verification. A software module
can be developed to decode the AIS Messages, derive and mark out the ship location on the
map using ship reported AIS data, satellite position data in order to validate its location.
