Title GPS Spoofing in Shipping: The Role of VDES in Enhancing Security and Reliability
Summary GPS spoofing presents a growing threat to maritime operations, enabling malicious vessels to falsify its positions and jeopardize safety, trade, and regulatory compliance. This research investigates how the VHF Data Exchange System (VDES)—a next-generation maritime communication framework—can address GPS vulnerabilities by integrating terrestrial, satellite, and encrypted data links. By analyzing VDES’s multi-layered validation mechanisms, anti-spoofing protocols, and real-time data-sharing capabilities, the study aims to demonstrate its potential as a resilient alternative to conventional GPS-dependent systems.
