Title | Minimally invasive physiological recording technologies and their power/communications interface (I) |
Summary | The project entails a ‘feasibility’ analysis on tetherless systems for physiological monitoring, which can largely be grouped into three categories: wireless (RF), optical, and piezoelectrical (ultrasound). The analysis will start by examining a reference paper written by the supervisor (https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9431529), and delve deeper into questions such as what are the ‘safe’ power ranges for RF, optical, and ultrasound, and for which biological targets. In addition to the fundamental limited in regards to safety, signal to noise ratio, etc., the project will also examine practical concerns such as the types of power modalities and magnitudes that can be provided by consumer wearables, if a tetherless recording system is proposed to be used in conjunction with them. Further studies may include, but not limited to, 1) 'reasonable' biomarkers to be targeted by the recording units and the physical size of such units 2) An implants can be ‘simpler,’ hence smaller and low-power consuming, if the internal interface/detector is ‘complex and powerful’ – but what is the practical balance between the two? While the project will largely entail literature reviews and analyses via first principle calculations, models and simulations, to verify certain conjectures, simple laboratory experiments might be conducted. |
