| Title | Development of a maintenance-free pump for water treatment |
| Objective | Centrifugal pumps with magnetically supported bearings have the advantages of completely eliminating mechanical contact, heat generation, lubrication, as well as wear and tear problems. This type of pump design allows for the elimination of rolling element bearings, seal and gasket components which are commonly found in conventional pumps requiring costly periodical maintenance. |
| Scope | To design and develop a completely magnetically suspended centrifugal pump. An efficient introduction of motoring torque and levitation forces onto the pump’s impeller will be under investigation. CFD analysis and experimental verification of the pump are necessary to validate the pump design in providing adequate clearance gaps between the rotating impeller and other parts of the device so that fluid and small particles can flow through the gaps, avoiding stagnation and clotting. |
