This workshop will investigate the role ASEAN foresees for its various cooperative mechanisms, and which one of those can realistically function as the institutional fulcrum for the AOIP. By doing so, the distinguished experts will discuss the nexus between individual ASEAN-led mechanisms and the wider geopolitical context, and by doing so, ultimately evaluate the prospects for ASEAN centrality in the Indo-Pacific.

Which part of ASEAN’s institutional architecture is best (and worst) suited to become the launch pad for the AOIP, and thus to maintain ASEAN centrality? And how would this impact individual forums in their current form and function? How can the EAS or other dialogue platforms help translate AOIP’s objectives into tangible outcomes and deliverables? Which multilateral arrangements are most or least durable? Is trade still the engine of cooperation when political-security issues are too contentious, or is it now also getting entangled in the intensifying rivalry? And last but not least, how can external powers be convinced to accept AOIP and ASEAN’s role in it These are the main questions this CMS workshops attempts to address by gathering a group of distinct experts on relevant topics.
