Event Info The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine is hosting the 4th edition of the James Best Distinguished Lecture with Professor Soumya Swaminathan on 20 March 2024. Titled Climate Change, Public Health & Equity, the Lecture will offer a crucial perspective on the convergence of environmental dynamics and medical challenges. It examines the profound impact of climate change on health, particularly among vulnerable populations, and underscores the need for a medical response that integrates climate science, public health measures, and considerations of equity. Professor Swaminathan emphasises the urgency of developing public health strategies to address changing disease patterns and health disparities exacerbated by climate shifts. Her call for inclusive policies aligns with the medical community's pivotal role in crafting adaptive and equitable solutions. This lecture resonates as a rallying cry for the medical field to proactively engage in the intersection of climate change and health, fostering resilient, just healthcare systems. Professor Soumya Swaminathan was most recently WHO’s Chief Scientist and before that, Deputy Director-General for Programmes. As WHO’s inaugural Chief Scientist, Professor Swaminathan built the Science division with a focus on research, quality assurance of norms and standards and digital health. She played a key role during the pandemic in coordinating scientific efforts at the WHO, as well as in setting up Covax, with a focus on equitable vaccine distribution to LMICs. A paediatrician from India and a globally recognised researcher on tuberculosis and HIV, she brings with her 30 years of experience in clinical care and research, and has worked throughout her career to translate research into impactful programmes.
