About the seminar: This session will offer insights to PhD researchers who are considering an Academic Career. Topics include a discussion of the different types of academic careers available, a look at recent hiring trends as well as advice on how to do well in the recruitment process, including networking, writing personal statements and preparing for interviews. It will also touch on the criteria for success in landing an academic position, maximising your offer and addressing gaps in your experience. This will create an appropriate and prioritized action plan on what you can do now to help you chances later.
About the speaker: With a background as a Chartered Engineer in aerospace engineering, Elaine is a freelance soft skills development consultant and an expert in doctoral education and career management. For more than ten years, Elaine led the team responsible for postgraduate professional development at Imperial College London, supporting more than 6000 graduate students in realising both academic and career goals. During this time, the innovation and impact of her team’s work were recognised by two national awards and resulted in numerous invitations to partner with internationally leading universities including NTU, HKU, MIT, and Tsinghua University. Elaine continues to research on doctoral education issues including the evaluation of skills development courses, the wellbeing of researchers and the role of creativity in scientific research.
