Developing  general practice based research networks: experience from Australia
Practice-based research networks (PBRNs) have developed internationally to support the development, conduct and translation of research in primary care. This presentation will provide a brief historic overview of PBRNs, discussing so-called ‘bottom-up’ and ‘top-down’ models to their establishment. I will discuss their role in supporting trials and developing large-scale general practice data repositories. I will present the example of VicRen at the University of Melbourne and subsequent approaches to develop a national model of PBRNs to support trials, disease surveillance and health services research in Australia.
